Candlelight vigil for George Floyd happening June 8 for Yates High School alumni

Jack Yates High School National Alumni Association is hosting a candlelight vigil for George Floyd, a Yates graduate, June 8 after the public viewing.

The candlelight vigil will take place at the Jack Yates High School football field (3650 Alabama St.) at 7:30 p.m. The Alumni Association has requested that former and current alumni wear Yates High School colors, crimson and gold, and bring a candle for the ceremony.


TODAY: Public viewing for George Floyd underway in Houston

The association has also asked attendees to wear masks and gloves and practice social distancing due to the continuing coronavirus pandemic.

Floyd was raised in Houston’s Third Ward and graduated from Yates High School in 1993, where he was known as a kind classmate and talented athlete.



Floyd died in Minneapolis police custody on May 25. His death has sparked protests against police brutality across the world.

A public viewing will be held from 12-6 p.m. on June 8 before Floyd is buried next to his mother in a private funeral on June 9.
