Holidaymakers are also advised to ensure they have a Travel insurance policy which encompasses delays and cancellations.

Mr Lloyd explains that Travels flying through Europe will be protected, however, this does not mean they will be compensated.

“You have the option to take an alternative flight with the airline to your destination, or cancel your flight and claim a full refund,” he explains.

“If the alternative flight offered isn’t at the right time for you then the airline is legally required to book you on a comparable flight with them or an alternative airline. You should not be charged any more for this.”

He adds that travel insurance will provide financial reimbursement for passengers who are stuck at the airport for more than 12 hours, or up to the amount specified on your policy.

The Met Office has also highlighted trains and roads as areas where transport disruption is likely to be rife.

Weather experts said: “The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain at times, leading to particularly poor driving conditions.”

Alas, if any outside transport disruption sows your journey to the airport, it seems travellers would not be due any compensation from their airline.
