Property for sale: Zoopla reveals a garden can boost house value by £22,000 1165358

When moving house, sellers will want to ensure they get the best possible price for their home. To achieve this, homeowners can make a few changes to their property before it goes on the market, and these could be simpler than you think. While many people focus on renovations within the property, taking a look outside could be the key to getting a good price, according to research by Zoopla and the Society of Garden Designers. In fact, buyers in Britain would pay an average of £15,000 more for a garden when moving house.

If looking to sell your home, buyers have revealed a well-designed garden is just as important as a good bathroom or kitchen.

On average, buyers would be willing to part with £15,000 for a garden but those living in the South East would be happy to pay an extra £21,925 for some greenery.

Buyers in Wales would spend the least for a garden, at just £5,832 and those living in London would pay extra £13,388.

Half the people in the study revealed they had been put off buying a place because of the garden in the past, making it even more important when trying to sell.

Sellers should stay clear of water features though, as these were considered the least desirable garden element.

So, what makes a garden so appealing?

Having some open space as part of a property gives homeowners extra room to relax or entertain, Sarah Morgan, Chair of the Society of Garden Designers explained.

She said: “It’s well known that the Brits have a passion for gardens and gardening so it’s not surprising that so many of us consider a beautiful outside space important in our own home.

“We know from our members that having a garden designed by a professional garden designer can add significant value to a property but, quite apart from the overall ‘wow’ factor, a good garden design can also add something really special to a home.

“Whether it’s a family garden to engage children with the outdoors or a garden room to escape, relax and entertain in, well-designed gardens can truly enrich the lives of the people who live there.”
