Sky is constantly updating and refreshing its Sky Q devices but this latest upgrade could be one of its most important in years.

The satellite TV firm has just announced that it is adding a dedicated Kids Safe Mode on Sky Q which will stop younger viewers accessing any programmes that are not suitable for them.

Once activated, via a pin code, it will allow parents to lock their Sky Q box in the Kids section.

All non-kids’ content including live TV channels, recordings, on-demand shows and even apps that feature unsuitable content will then be blocked until the mode is deactivated.

Speaking about the update, Stephen van Rooyen, Chief Executive UK & Ireland commented: “At Sky, we go further than anyone else to ensure we put families first when developing our services.

“Sky Q’s new Kids Safe Mode is a super simple way for parents to have ultimate peace of mind when their children are watching TV.”

Kids Safe Mode will also be joined by a new parents guide set to launch later this year from Sky and Common Sense Media to help parents make more informed choices about what their children watch.

This along with Sky’s existing family-friendly features will give customers access to the most comprehensive protection across TV and online.

Kids Safe Mode will roll out to Sky Q customers from this spring.

The News of this upgrade comes as Sky recently added Netflix to its service which now allows customers to access this streaming service straight from their set-top box.

The firm has also teased more new features which could arrive later this year including improved voice search which could allow customers to control all aspects of their viewing by simply speaking into their remote control.

Another recent update is also allowing customers to watch Sky on the move without it eating into their monthly data package.

Coming via Sky Mobile, this new plan offers unlimited data when watching content on apps such as Sky Go, Sky Kids and Sky Sports.

This means you can watch a whole F1 Grand Prix or series of Game of Thrones without using a single MB of your monthly data allowance.

Sky says that Watch is available to all Sky Mobile customers, although what you can access will depend on your Sky TV subscription.
