Which films will win big at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards? Two days out from the show, the likely victors seem to have fallen into place, though there’s still plenty of room for surprises.
The top category of Best Picture – Drama is almost universally expected to go to A Star Is Born, which was immediately considered the awards season movie to beat after a rapturous response at the Toronto International Film Festival. Certainly don’t count out Black Panther, though, which was nothing short of a phenomenon in 2018. A Black Panther win would be the first time this award went to the year’s highest grossing U.S. film since 2003.
Best Picture – Musical or Comedy is more of a toss-up, but Green Book is the slight favorite. Though the film hasn’t been without its critics, it’s exactly the kind of movie, a feel-good film that seems like it’s from a different era, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would lap up — although the Dick Cheney biopic Vice, which earned more nominations than any other movie, could very easily steal its thunder.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama is one of the few categories that seems like a done deal, with Christian Bale’s (Vice) transformative performance as Cheney all but certain to pick him up a Globe, while Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) is also thought to have the best shot in Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama appears to be Lady Gaga’s (A Star Is Born) to lose, while Olivia Colman (The Favourite) will probably walk away with the prize for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy, although Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns) is a dark horse in that category.
But this is the Golden Globes, a show infamous for downright bizarre decisions and shocking upsets, meaning the only thing we can be sure to expect is the unexpected. Brendan Morrow
