Just a few months ago a large portion of West Bromwich Albion fans couldn’t stand the sight of Gareth Barry.
The former Aston Villa midfielder arrived at The Hawthorns in 2017 and was one of the poster boys of a bitter relegation campaign.
Midway through last season Barry was one of four Albion players to allegedly hijack a taxi during a warm weather training camp in Barcelona.
But the Premier League’s all-time record appearance holder is beginning to make amends and produced arguably his best display of the campaign at Bramall Lane on Friday night as Albion defeated promotion rivals Sheffield United 2-1.
Barry struck the leveller towards the end of the first half following David McGoldrick’s opener before left-back Kieran Gibbs sealed the win in the second half.
And fans took to social media to hail Barry’s brilliance against the Blades…
Matthew Stephens: “Gareth Barry showed he was a different class tonight.”
Ron Turner: “Gareth Barry was our shining light brilliant display.”
Paul Skeldon: “Barry controlled the game. He won us that game!!!”
Chris Hocknull: “Well played lads, great 2nd half. Gareth Barry as good as I’ve seen him for us tonight.”
Stuart Clement: “Garry Barry rolling back the years, superb.”
James Severn: “Class shone through at last in the second half. Gareth Barry immense.”
Martin Daniels: “Gareth Barry, what a career, so underrated, top pro.”
Conrad Chircop: “His rehab from the Barcelona taxi accident is complete. He’s come back this season with resolve and exemplary behaviour.”
