Australia to recognise Jerusalem as capital of Israel and NOT Tel Aviv | World | News 1059305 1

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed Australia will follow in the footsteps of Republican firebrand Donald Trump and recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The Australian government will establish a trade and defence office in West Jerusalem, but will not move the embassy. Mr Morrison announced the government was considering the embassy move ahead of the Wentworth by-election in October.

This was met with criticism from Muslim-majority nations.

In a speech, he said: “The Australian authorities has decided that Australia now recognizes west Jerusalem, because the seat of the Knesset and most of the institutions of presidency, is the capital of Israel.”

Australian authorities warned citizens to take care while Travelling in neighbouring Muslim-majority Indonesia ahead of the announcement.

Despite Australia’s then-foreign minister Julie Bishop saying in June “the Australian government will not be moving our embassy to Jerusalem,” Mr Morrison said in October he was “open-minded” about following in the footsteps of Donald Trump.

The Department of Foreign Affairs warned Australians preparing to head to Bali and other tropical island destinations for upcoming summer holidays should “exercise a high degree of caution.”
