Phillies reportedly interested in Jean Segura

PHILADELPHIA — Everyone is still waiting for the Phillies to make their big splash.

Perhaps they are getting closer. Seattle reportedly has had interest in Phillies shortstop J.P. Crawford.

PHILADELPHIA — Everyone is still waiting for the Phillies to make their big splash.

Perhaps they are getting closer. MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal reported that the Phillies had interest in a Jean SeguraEdwin Diaz trade with the Mariners before the Mets included a slew of prospects in their trade offer for Robinson Cano and Diaz. Seattle reportedly has had interest in Phillies shortstop J.P. Crawford.

Tweet from @Ken_Rosenthal: #Phillies showed interest in Jean Segura-Edwin Diaz package from #Mariners, sources tell The Athletic. Might still have interest in Segura alone if Diaz-Cano to #Mets goes through.

Philadelphia could still land Segura, who makes sense for the Phils for a few reasons. NBC Sports Philadelphia reported that the Phillies would still try to acquire Manny Machado even if they landed Segura, hoping Machado would play third base.

Now that would be a big move.

Segura, 28, hit .304 with 10 home runs, 63 RBIs and a .755 OPS in 632 plate appearances last season with Seattle. He ranked ninth among 21 qualified shortstops in baseball with a 3.8 Wins Above Replacement, according to FanGraphs. He ranks seventh among shortstops in WAR over the past three seasons. Segura is regarded as an above-average defender, meaning he should help the Phillies’ porous defense. He is also remarkably difficult to strike out, which was an issue last season for the Phillies. Segura’s strikeout rate (10.9 percent) ranked fourth-lowest out of 140 qualified hitters.

Segura is affordable, too. He is signed through 2022, making a club-friendly $14.25 million each of the next four seasons, with a $17 million club option for ’23.

Segura would be an immediate upgrade to the left side of the Phils’ infield.

If the Phillies play Segura at shortstop and Machado signs elsewhere, they could use some combination of Maikel Franco and Crawford at third base. Scott Kingery, who played mostly shortstop last season, could move to second if the Phillies trade Cesar Hernandez. It also would allow the Phillies to still pursue free agents Bryce Harper and Patrick Corbin, among others.

The Athletic reported Friday that Corbin could sign before the Winter Meetings. The Yankees and Nationals are pursuing Corbin, too.

It is worth noting that Segura has been traded three times in his career, and twice in the past three years. He had problems with the Mariners last season, most notably getting into a scuffle with teammate Dee Gordon. Manager Scott Servais seems to have had his issues with Segura, too. But it seems that is not a stumbling block for the Phillies. Segura is a good player and the Phillies need more of them.
