Doting Prince Charles was looking to buy his young grandchildren a present from his overseas trip during a visit to a local market in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

But in an entertaining moment Charles came into difficulty as he attempted to get the right local currency together to pay for his shopping.

The light-hearted exchange is set to be played in new BBC documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70.

As the situation unfolds, the documentary’s narrator says: “In the background, his protection officer and private secretary had to leap into action on his behalf.”

The documentary shows Charles deciding which present to treat Charlotte and George to, during his visit to the South Pacific.

Charles opts for a pair of wooden pig ornaments for his lucky grandchildren.

Charles says: “I’m wondering whether to buy a pig or not.

“They’re rather nice. Children always love those don’t they, pigs?”

Speaking to a member of his team, Charles adds: “James, I may have to take these back for the children. Could I buy two of those?”

Charles, who became a grandfather for the third time on April 23 this year when Prince Louis was born, is known to adore his grandchildren.

In a video of Charles posted on Clarence House’s Twitter last week, the 69-year-old has a framed picture of Louis’s christening in the background behind him in a touching tribute to his cute grandchildren.

And Charles, who had a very close relationship with his grandmother the Queen Mother, previously said of his grandchildren: “It’s a different part of your life.

“The great thing is to encourage them. Show them things to take their interest. My grandmother did that, she was wonderful.

“It is very important to create a bond when they are very young.”

And Charles revealed he is looking forward to becoming a grandfather again next year, as Meghan Markle is expecting her first child with Prince Harry in spring 2019.

Speaking the day after Meghan announced her pregnancy to the world, Charles said he had toasted the royal baby News “several times”.

Prince, Son And Heir: Charles At 70 will air on Thursday November 8 at 9pm on BBC One.
