The Juventus man has named his closest challengers
Cristiano Ronaldo has listed the five players who he believes are his rivals for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
The Portuguese superstar is hoping to claim the prize for the sixth time in his career, but acknowledges that there is plenty of competition this year.
Despite being locked in a battle with Lionel Messi for football’s most prestigious individual award over the past ten years, Ronaldo isn’t sure the Argentinian will be in the running this time around.
When asked who his main rivals are, CR7 told France Football: “The same as usual, even if I don’t know if Messi will be on the podium this time.
“So, let’s say Salah, Modric, Griezmann, Varane, Mbappe – the French in general because they are world champions.
“But I will wait and see if all these players are still at the top in ten years, like Messi and I have done, and like we continue to do.
“Still there, on the podium, since more than ten years.”
Mo Salah has had a record-breaking 2018 with Champions League finalists Liverpool, while Luka Modric recently won FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award after leading Croatia to the World Cup final and winning the Champions League with Real Madrid.
Antoine Griezmann, Raphael Varane and Kylian Mbappe were all instrumental to France’s 2018 World Cup win, though Cristiano Ronaldo is still content with his own achievements.
“I said many times, winning a sixth Ballon d’Or is not an obsession,” Ronaldo continued.
“And I do not ask the question in these terms. I already know, in my heart of hearts, that I am one of the best players in history.”
