Amir Khan and Kell Brook TRADE INSULTS despite fight delay | Boxing | Sport 1038089 1

A Khan vs Brook match-up has been touted since the former returned to the ring in April, but protracted contract talks have led to Brook facing another opponent for his next bout.

Eddie Hearn promotes both fighters and is keen to make the huge domestic contest, but contractual technicalities brought negotiations to an impasse.

Brook agreed to drop down from super welterweight to 147lbs to make the fight happen, but Khan remained insistent on a rehydration clause.

The naturally-smaller Khan wanted it so that both fighters weigh up to 147lbs the day before the fight but can’t weigh more than 157lbs on the night.

It is common practice under IBF regulations, which Brook abided by during his 33-month reign as welterweight world champion.

But as the fight would be a domestic bout there is no obligation for Brook to agree to the term, and Hearn said such a stipulation is unlikely.

Hearn does still expect the fight to take place in February or March 2019, but has booked Brook – who hasn’t fought since March – a fight in the meantime.

The Yorkshireman’s opponent will be confirmed this week and the fight will headline a Matchroom Sport card at the Sheffield Arena.

Brook attended both of Khan’s comeback fights this year, entering the ring to trash-talk his longtime adversary in April.

Speaking to Sky Sports following the announcement of his December card, Brook said: “I was ringside for Amir Khan’s last fight.

“So let’s see if he’ll be there on December 8, or will he be too shook for Brook?”

Khan reacted to his rival’s words on Twitter, posting: “Really! You mention me in all your interviews saying ‘i want to fight khan next.’

“All the crying you do, then u go and fight another bum. What’s the delay Kelly?

“Your (sic) a joke. Ps You better not lose in December! ‘I won’t be ringside!’”

Brook responded to Khan, attaching a picture of the 31-year-old during a Bushtucker trial on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, saying: “Who put 20p inside you last night ?

“The ‘delay’ has always been the same Amy- waiting for you to put your webcam down and find your b******!!

“And of course you won’t be Ringside! This is what happens whenever you’re within a 5 mile radius of me #TooShookForBrook.”
