Brexit News: a petition to stop a People’s Vote has gained tens of thousands of signatures
The petition, launched by Ronald Mitchell on the official parliamentary petitions website, has already reached more than 30,000 supporters at the time of writing – and is continuing to rise by the minute.
In contrast, a petition for a “referendum to join the EU on the 30th of March 2019” had garnered a mere 82 signatures at the time of writing.
The apparent dwindling of public appetite for a second Brexit vote comes after a YouGov poll released on Tuesday, October 23, stated under a quarter of Remain voters now anticipate a re-run of the 2016 vote.
In response to the petition – amid fading support for a so-called People’s Vote – a number of MEPs have spoken to Express.co.uk to voice their anger and frustration at those acting “like spoilt children”.
Reacting to the news, Independent MEP for North East England Jonathan Arnott said: “The people voted in the 2014 European elections, the 2015 General Election, the 2016 referendum, and the 2017 General Election.
“We don’t need a fifth vote, people don’t want one, and there isn’t time for one.
“We’re five months from Brexit, yet Electoral Commission rules require a six-month campaign period for any referendum.
“The EU won’t agree to extend Article 50 because it would mess up the European Elections across the whole EU next year.

“The whole idea of another referendum is illogical, destabilising and doomed to failure.
“I’m delighted that this petition recognises political reality.”
West Midlands MEP Bill Etheridge also voiced his concern over those acting “like spoilt children” demanding a second referendum.
The Libertarian Party UK Deputy Chairman said: “Once again a vocal minority is trying to defy the will of the people.

Protestors blame hard-line Brexiteers such as Jacob Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson for Brexit
“17.4m of us voted to leave – the biggest vote in UK history. If our voices are not listened to – or fudged by the atrocious Chequers sell-out, then representative democracy truly is dead.
“Watching the Losers March on Saturday has exposed the fragility of our system to aggressive bullying.
“Like spoilt children, they must not get their own way.”
John Flack, Conservative MEP for the East of England, argued pursuing a second Brexit vote was “high-handed” and “patronising” as he called on “ordinary voters” to “slap down” those calling for a people’s vote.
He said: “The liberal elite in this country are becoming obsessive about their so-called People’s Vote.
The Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable is also a supporter of a re-run of the Brexit vote
“We already had a referendum – THE referendum – and they lost.
“Their whole approach is high-handed, patronising and anti-democratic – so it is only right for ordinary voters to rally behind this petition and slap them down.”
Margot Parker, UKIP MEP for the East Midlands, also conveyed her frustration at attempts “to overturn democracy” and hold another vote on the UK’s membership of the EU bloc.
She said: “It is not a surprise to me that people are signing this petition to stop a second referendum.
“We voted to leave and the people signing this petition are tired of excuses from those in power who simply are not up to the task of getting us out of the EU.
Thousands marched in London last weekend to ‘demand a People’s Vote’
“People are also growing weary at the constant attempts by some of those who voted to remain attempting to overturn democracy by holding another vote – some people simply will not rest until they get the decision they want to see – it’s a betrayal of democracy.”
Amjad Bashir, Conservative MEP for Yorkshire and The Humber, argued “ordinary voters” were “furious” at the people’s vote proposal.
He said: “I think a lot of ordinary voters are furious at the idea that some people didn’t like the outcome of the first referendum so want another go.
“The British people won’t be taken for fools and this petition is a way to vent their anger and make sure their decision is respected.”
