Ronald Acuna Jr. crushes grand slam in NLDS

ATLANTA — Ronald Acuna Jr. passed Mickey Mantle to become the youngest player to hit a grand slam in the postseason as the Braves erupted to take a 5-0 lead on the Dodgers in Game 3 of the National League Division Series on Sunday night at SunTrust Park.

Acuna turned on a 98.1-mph fastball from fellow rookie Walker Buehler and watched it sail into the left-center-field seats. The Braves’ 20-year-old phenom hit 26 homers during the regular season, but this was his first career grand slam.

Having gone scoreless through the first 19 innings of the NLDS, the Braves got on the board when Sean Newcomb drew a bases-loaded walk against Buehler, who suddenly ran into command issues after a five-pitch first inning.

Nick Markakis drew a four-pitch walk to open the second, but Buehler bounced back by striking out Johan Camargo and Kurt Suzuki. Then the always-aggressive Ozzie Albies showed some patience when he looked at a pair of pitches outside the strike zone before singling to center.

When Cody Bellinger bobbled the hit, Markakis took third and Albies scooted to second on Bellinger’s throw. This prompted the Dodgers to intentionally walk Charlie Culberson and load the bases for Newcomb, who entered the game 3-for-72 in his career. Newcomb looked at four straight pitches out of the zone and the Braves had their first run of the series on the eighth bases-loaded walk issued to a pitcher in postseason history.

Mantle had been the youngest player to hit a grand slam in the postseason, doing so as a 21-year-old in the 1953 World Series.

Acuna is only the fourth rookie to homer in the postseason, joining Paul Goldschmidt in 2011, Ricky Ledee in 1999 and Gil McDougald in 1951.

Mark Bowman has covered the Braves for MLB.com since 2001.
