The Australian exits the tournament in controversial fashion for the third year in a row

Nick Kyrgios crashed out prematurely of the Shanghai Open for the third year in a row after rowing with an umpire.

The Australian lost 4-6 6-4 6-3 by American qualifier Bradley Klahn, ranked 104, but his prolonged argument with French umpire Damien Dumusois was the talking point.

Kyrgios was frustrated throughout the match

Dumusois told Kyrgios a point in the second set was ‘really borderline,’ appearing to criticise him for a lack of effort.

The 23-year-old reacted by saying ‘I don’t care’ and later barked at Dumusois ‘you have no right to tell me that it’s poor’.

In a match which lasted just one hour and 17 minutes, Kyrgios lost five straight games from 4-4 in the second set.

It is the third successive year in which the Australian has gone out of the tournament in controversial fashion.

Kyrgios has been fined at the Shanghai Open in the past two years

At last year’s tournament, Kyrgios smashed two balls out of court in frustration and stormed off midway through his match with Steve Johnson in the first round.

As a result, he was given $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

In 2016, the Australian was booed by the crowd after patting the ball over the net several times during his serves and then walking back to his chair before opponent Mischa Zverer had landed.

He was subsequently fined $16,500 for his behaviour in the 6-3 6-1 defeat.
