Chelsea legend John Terry announces retirement from professional football amid Aston Villa job speculation

The centre-back won five league titles, five FA Cups and the Champions League with the Blues

Former Chelsea captain John Terry has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 37-year-old posted a social media statement on Sunday evening revealing he had decided to call it quits, weeks after turning down the chance to sign for Spartak Moscow.

John Terry left Chelsea at the end of the 2016/17 season, then spent a year at Aston Villa

“After 23 incredible years as a footballer, I have decided now is the right time to retire from playing,” Terry wrote.

He left Chelsea after winning his fifth league title at the club in 2017 and went on to captain Aston Villa last season.

The Championship side reportedly want him in their new-look coaching staff, with Thierry Henry in pole position to become manager this week.

Terry turned down a move to Spartak Moscow last month, despite reportedly having a medical, saying it was not right for his family.

In his career at Stamford Bridge, Terry won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and the Champions League.

He also won three League Cups and a Europa League, recording a total of 717 appearances for the Blues.

In the statement Terry said: “As a 14-year-old, I made my best and biggest decision: to sign for Chelsea Football Club.

“Words will never be enough to show how much everyone at the club means to me, in particular the fans.

“I also want to say a huge thank you to Aston Villa for giving me the opportunity to play at such a big club and captain it throughout the 2017/18 season.

“It was a privilege to represent such a renowned football club with great fans.

“I look forward to the next chapter in my life and the challenges ahead.”
