London SHOOTING: Couple injured on Essex Road, Highbury, as suspect remains on the LOOSE | UK | News

At around 9.30pm, Met Police were called to Essex Road in North London.

Police, including firearms officers, attended the scene.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: “A 34-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man were found suffering from minor injuries.

“The woman has been taken to hospital for treatment to a hand injury believed to have been caused by shattered glass.

“The man was treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service.

“A bus sustained minor damage in the incident.

“The unknown suspect fled on foot.”

Officers remain at the scene and there are currently road closures in place.

Footage emerged on social media shows shattered glass on the street, and a shop window damaged by a bullet.

A woman on Twitter wrote: “Drive by shooting at the Green Man.

“I heard six shots fired.

“It’s calming down now and looks like no-one was hurt!”

Another user, who was passing by Essex Road at the time of the shooting, blamed the Mayor of London for rise of crime in the capital and claimed his taxi was hit by a shot.

He tweeted: “Thank you for failing on this city Mr Mayor.

“An hour ago my taxi was in the wrong place at the wrong time when gunshots rang out just behind me in Islington.

“Luckily passenger and I were not hit but my taxi was.”

He demanded Sadiq Kahn “sort it out and resign”.

The London Mayor has come under fire repeatedly for the capital’s spate of violence.

Though he has continually blamed the surge of crime on Government cuts.

A spokesman for Mr Khan said: “The Mayor is leading from the front to tackle violent crime, but it has been made difficult by Theresa May’s cuts to the Met Police and youth services.”
