Dubai: Tattoo laws for tourists on holiday in the UAE with bans for rude inkings | Travel News | Travel 1019669 1

Dubai tourists have to follow different rules when in the country that differ from western countries.

Drinking in public and public displays of affection are against the law and could see hefty fines or prison sentences.

One confusing issue for tourists is whether tattoos are legal or illegal in the country.

Thankfully, it all depends on what the tattoo is of and where it was inked.

Tourists with tattoos will not find themselves jailed or fined if they are on display.

However, they must not have anything deemed offensive such as rude words, naked bodies or profane images.

The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment can ban tourists for life however if the tattoo is deemed offensive in extreme cases.

While many believe it is illegal to get a tattoo in the UAE, there is no law prohibiting it.

However, tattoos are deemed a form of self-injury, something which is forbidden in Islamic culture.

It is illegal to get a tattoo by an unlicensed artist due to the health risk.

Reddit users took to the forum to reveal their experiences of being in the country while having tattoos.

One wrote: “It’s ok to have them exposed as long as they aren’t offensive; I’m inked up and haven’t had a problem yet.

“On occasion, I have been stopped and asked where I got them from; that’s the most of it.”

Many western tourists who visit the country have tattoos on display with few problems reported.

Dubai Travellers are not allowed to enter the country if they are under 18-years-old by themselves.

A new law brought in this year dictates minors must have a letter from their guardian as well as have somewhere to stay in the country.

Other laws include alcohol, where it is illegal to be drunk in public.

Many licensed areas serve alcohol which is legal, but being intoxicated outside of these can cause issues.

It is also illegal to have any alcohol in the system when driving.
