Macron appears ecstatic despite being very wet at the winners presentation after France won the World Cup after beating Croatia 4-2 in the thrilling final match in Russia.
A huge umbrella has been held over Putin’s head but the French leader does not seem to be so lucky.
Despite being extremely wet, Macron embraced the French football players and kissed many of them on the forehead as he was clearly bursting with pride.
France last won the World Cup on home soil in 1998.
The Croatian players received their runners up medals from the FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Putin, Macron and the President of Croatia Kolina Grabar- Kitarovic before the French side received their cup.
The French coach Didier Deschamps said: “It is really beautiful. It is marvellous. We did not play a great match but we showed a strong mental quality.
“We also scored four goals. We merit it. I am very happy for this team. We are coming from very far and it has not always been easy, but thanks to hard work, they are here and are on top of the world for the next four years.”
French player Antoine Griezmann, who scored one of the goals, said: “I don’t know where I am, it is great… Very happy. It was a difficult match. Croatia play a great game. We started timidly. We knew it was a World Cup Final. We got into the game and on counter attacks, we made the difference. Very happy. We look forward to lifting the cup and taking it to France”.
French fans have been celebrating since the final whistle across France as up to a million people are expected to descend on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, draped in their national flag.
The French president took to Twitter to simply say ‘Thank you’ to the French team.
Russia has been congratulated for hosting a successful World Cup.
When Macron and his wife Brigitte met the Russian leader at the Kremlin before the match, he congratulated him for his “perfect” organisation of the World Cup.
Macron said: “To do it in safe conditions and with everything going perfectly was a challenge, so well done for that.”
