Shaqiri moved one step closer to sealing an Anfield switch on Thursday night when Liverpool agreed to meet the winger’s release clause.
And the Switzerland international jetted to Merseyside this morning to undergo a set of routine tests to confirm he has no underlying medical problems.
Shaqiri is poised to put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Liverpool and he is expected to don the number 23 shirt last worn by Emre Can.
The Swiss FA have now confirmed the move is on the cards with a statement on their official Website.
“Xherdan Shaqiri makes a remarkable change within England,” it read.
“The Premier League relegated Stoke City agreed with Liverpool on a 17-million-franc (£13m) deal.
“After the medical test, Shaqiri signs the contract.”
The Swiss FA’s statement goes on to detail Shaqiri’s career, which has taken in spells at Basel, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and latterly Stoke.
Former Arsenal star Stewart Robson reckons the 26-year-old will have a similar role at Liverpool to the one he took on at Bayern.
“I can’t see him getting into the team,” said Robson.
“I can see him being a squad player who can come on, but he didn’t do particularly well at Bayern Munich when he was a squad player.
“But, is he better than [Adam] Lallana? On his day he gives you something different to Lallana.
“Is he going to play in that hole in behind the main striker? I think he could.
“If [Mohamed] Salah was injured, if [Sadio] Mane was injured he could go wide and do a good job.
“So I’d say that’s a hit, as a squad player, Shaqiri to Liverpool.”
Shaqiri heads to Liverpool having scored 15 goals in 84 Premier League appearances during his three-season stint at Stoke.
