The 86-year-old Coronation Street star believed a particular story on the soap didn’t suit his character and revealed the producers eventually changed it.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Bill revealed: “It was the Ken and Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) love triangle.
“We got awards for it in the end but, I put so much anger and frustration in to it.”
Explaining the situation, he divulged: “Deirdre was going to have an affair with Mike Baldwin (Johnny Briggs) so they were trying to turn Ken into a bit of a nerdy character.
“I was fighting that and I didn’t like that.
“Imagine the situation, your wife is having an affair with someone and you’re arguing in the corridors of the house and then there’s a knock at the door from the guy she’s having an affair with.
“The whole page of dialogue was like ‘you alright Deirdre, there’s not a problem with this’ and Ken just stood there and I said to the director ‘sorry I just cannot do that. I just cannot do it.”
Telling producers what he wanted to do instead, he added: “They said ‘what do you want to do’ and I said ‘well I want to hit him and they said you can’t do that it’s not in the script.
“Well I said ‘well let me go to to hit him’ and eventually that’s what we did but with my energy and power, frustration and anger Anne actually cried because she was vulnerable.
“What you really saw was true emotions flying around.”
Despite not being pleased with the original plan of the storyline, Bill added: “They very rarely give you anything that can offend you or give you something you feel you can’t truly portray.”
Bill isn’t planning on leaving the ITV soap anytime soon, admitting he wants to be the first centenarian still working in a soap.
He said: “While I’m able to do it, and while they want me I will be there.
“I say I would like to be the first centenarian still working in a soap, that’s my next job.”
Bill has recently released his new autobiography Life and Soul: How to Live a Long and Healthy Life.
Within the book, he opens up about his life including how he deals with grief, ageing and meditation.
Speaking about the novel, he said: “I’m totally open and honest and just writing how I handle things, my way and my knowing.
“If it helps others it helps others and if it doesn’t it doesn’t.”
Speaking about the reaction so far, he said: “It’s been really well perceived and loads of people are saying they like it.
“If I help to inspire others in any way, that’s really lovely.”
