A 10th-round stoppage of Jorge Linares on Saturday night to claim the WBA lightweight confirmed Lomachenko’s status as one of the finest pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.
The Ukrainian became the fastest man ever to become a three-weight world champion, having previously claimed straps at featherweight and super-featherweight.
And while the 30-year-old now wants to unify the belts in the lightweight category, a showdown with Garcia – who will unify the WBC and IBF titles against Robert Easter Jr on July 28 – could be one of epic proportions.
However, Garcia’s camp are concerned that while Lomachenko himself wants to take the fight, his promoters, and specifically Arum, could stop it happening over fears he might be beaten.
“When it comes to negotiations, Arum is going to go, ‘It’s because Mikey. We can’t work with Showtime or Mikey’,” Mikey’s brother and trainer Robert told ES News.
“Mikey is not going to fight Lomachenko under Arum’s terms because the money will not be the same.”
Arum, 86, is a legendary figure in boxing, having previously promoted the likes of Marvin Hagler vs Sugar Ray Leonard and Evander Holyfield vs George Foreman.
He has also worked with Oscar De La Hoya, who was ringside to watch his charge Linares on Saturday night, and still handles Manny Pacquiao.
Perhaps Arum’s greatest achievement of the modern era was getting Pacquiao in the ring with Floyd Mayweather, although the negotiations for that fight took years and the American is keen to avoid a repeat of that situation.
”With a Mikey Garcia fight, it becomes the second coming of Mayweather-Pacquiao,” Arum said after Lomachenko’s win over Linares.
“The negotiation will go on. I’m tired of all that.
“He wants to to fight, let him call me. I’ll give him a number.
“If it’s not good, f**k it, I ain’t negotiating.”
And the acrimony between the two parties appears to have started already, with Robert Garcia claiming both Lomachenko and Mikey Garcia will have to be wary of Arum’s negotiating tactics.
”Mikey’s going to make [Lomachenko] an offer that is much more than what Arum can give him, but Arum’s not going to let him,” Robert said.
”He’s not going to let Lomachenko come fight on Showtime on Mikey’s card. Lomachenko is going to make the money, Arum’s not.
“Arum’s going to make the money fighting on his card.
“He’s going to offer Mikey $2million while Mikey’s been making two times more than that in his last fight.
“They’re going to tell Lomachenko, ‘You’re going to make $2.5million,’ but Arum knows he’s probably going to generate $10 million.
“But over here everything that is generated is for the fighters.
“Mikey is probably going to give Lomachenko his best offer he can have, but Arum’s still not going to let him, because Arum wants to make $6million for himself.
“That’s what I think is going to stop the fight. Mikey has been making three times more than Lomachenko made in his last fight.”
