That is the verdict of former Formula One star Mark Webber.
Ricciardo’s F1 future is up in the air at present, with his current deal set to expire this season.
The Australian has said he will not discuss his long-term plans until later this year, unlike Verstappen, who has already signed a contract extension with Christian Horner’s team.
Speculation has been rife that either Ricciardo or his Red Bull co-star will join Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next season.
But fellow countryman Webber insists the Australian driver should simply worry about beating Verstappen this year.
“I think the best thing he can do is beat Max,” Webber told Motorsport.com.
“Which he knows, and he’s going to do his best to do that.
“He wants to try and have a crack at that for five or six months, then look at the options.
“I don’t think Mercedes will be rushing to make a decision either; they’re going to keep a good eye on Valtteri [Bottas] and see how he’s performing, probably until Canada.
“That’s like dog’s balls – everyone can see that coming.
“There’s an obvious link – they’re both out of contract, he’s a top-flight driver, and there’s a chance for a switch.”
Ricciardo and his F1 counterparts will get the 2018 campaign underway in Australia next month.
