UPDATE ONE: The issues affecting Twitter tonight appear to have been resolved.
This evening Down Detector registered a peak of over 6,000 users reporting issues with Twitter.
However, that figure has just fallen to a few dozen now.
Once services were back up and running as per usual, Twitter users took to the social networking site to tweet about the outage.
One user tweeted: “Twitter went down for about 20 minutes and I couldn’t even complain about it on Twitter.”
While another wrote: “TWITTER DOWN, GUYS. TWITTER DOWN. SOMEONE HELP. TWITTER, DON’T SCARE ME.”
One added: “When Twitter goes down and you can’t check Twitter to see if it’s just you #TwitterDown”.
And another posted: “That was the longest 7 minutes of my life #TwitterDown”.
ORIGINAL: Twitter is down right now for thousands of users who have reported issues with the micro-blogging site today.
Independent website Down Detector has registered thousands of reports of Twitter down this evening.
Around 40 per cent of reported issues centre on the Twitter website, while almost 60 per cent of issues relate to both the iPad and Android apps.
Down Detector is an independent website which tracks global outages by monitoring social mentions around specific topics.
The website’s outage map has registered reports of Twitter down in the UK and large parts of Europe.
The Twitter issues come after the Facebook-owned WhatsApp service went down on New Year’s Eve.
Down Detector showed thousands of WhatsApp users experiencing connection issues on NYE 2017.
According to their data, the most common complaint with the hugely-successful messenger was sending and receiving messages from friends.
During the outage, one user reported: “Not working in Milton Keynes….. I’m guessing you were suprised by the new year celebrations… Again!”
