BOSTON—Stanford University economics professor John Taylor, a contender to become the next Federal Reserve chairman, Friday renewed his criticism that the central bank helped fuel the financial crisis by keeping interest rates too low.

Fed “policy did seem to go off track” in the early to mid-2000s, causing the economy to overheat, Mr. Taylor said at a conference hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.
