The Englishman, who has finished runner-up twice in three years at Augusta, admits losing out to Garcia at the first extra hole having led by one stroke on the 17th tee is painful but believes he will still be a Masters champion one day.

“This is a tournament I think I am going to win one day. I feel good here. This is my favourite tournament of the year,” said Rose, 36.

“I have plenty more looks, and I feel good about it happening. I still have a bunch of good years in me and this is one I hope I can knock off.

“It’s going to sting for sure but I really feel like this is a tournament that I can still go on to win. I’d like to win three or four Green Jackets – but one would be enough.”

Rose, the 2013 US Open champion, was proud of the part he played in a compelling final round duel which saw Garcia finally break his Major hoodoo at the age of 37.

“I would say this one probably is one that slipped by but I can’t pick holes in my performance. I felt fantastic out there. I felt cool, calm and collected and I really stepped up. Barring a great comeback from Sergio, it was mine to cruise to the house but it’s not always that easy,” he said.

“You’re going to win Majors and you’re going to lose Majors but you’ve got to be willing to lose them. You’ve got to put yourself out there. You’ve got to hit the top of the leaderboard. There’s a lot of pressure out there and if you’re not willing to enjoy it, then you’re not ready to win these tournaments. I loved it out there.”

Garcia, who rose to No 7 in the world rankings after becoming the sixth successive first-time Major winner, was overjoyed to emulate fellow Spaniards Jose Maria Olazabal and Seve Ballesteros in winning at Augusta.

“It’s amazing. It’s something I always hoped I would achieve but I didn’t know if I was going to do it,” he said.

“It’s such an honour to be in the same group as the two best golfers in Spanish history but also my two golfing idols. To be able to call myself a Masters champion, as they do, and see Jose Maria in the Champions Locker Room and maybe even share a locker with him is going to be unbelievable. I wish Seve was here so we could do it too.”
