By the numbers: Warriors, Cavaliers headline a ridiculous night of stats in the NBA

It seems like every night in the NBA this season, there are a crazy number of eye-popping nights. There were 96 30-plus performances last season through 17 games played. This campaign, that number is a whopping 129 — 33 more. On Wednesday night, even the standard that has been set this season was raised. A look at the amazing performances from around the NBA on Wednesday …

80-point halves: Two!

The Cavaliers went out and put up 81 on the Blazers on 59 percent shooting, hitting 16 3-pointers in the first two frames. Kevin Love scored 34 in the first quarter alone. Amazingly, it’s the second 81-point half the Blazers have allowed this calendar year, after giving up 81 last March to … the Warriors.

Then the Warriors went out and dropped 80 on the Lakers (and they were definitely gunning for 82 as if they were very much aware of what the Cavs had done) in the first half, shooting 62 percent from the field and assisting on 26 of 29 baskets scored.

For more on that, read our comparison of the two insane first-halves.

Most points in a first quarter in NBA history: 34

Kevin Love scored 34 points in the first quarter vs. the Blazers, hitting 8 of 10 from deep. It’s the second-most in a single quarter in league history behind Klay Thompson’s 37 last year. For a guy who didn’t “fit in,” he has certainly found a pretty snug fit with this year’s Cavs team as they defend their title.

Warriors set franchise record for assists: 47

If they had put the hammer down, they could have tied the record (Milwaukee with 53 in 1978). Instead, they settled for the franchise record and the most assists by any NBA team since 1991. They assisted on 89 percent of their made buckets. That’s an 88.6 assist percentage, the highest for any team with at least 50 buckets since 1984.

Golden State always shoots well, but it’s clear that this team has a whole other level of ball movement it’s capable of.

40-point performances: 3

Damian Lillard put up 40 in the loss to the Cavaliers, while Kevin Love, after scoring 34 points in the first quarter, topped out with 40. Then Anthony Davis scored 45 points in a victory against the Wolves, maybe the most dominant performance Davis has had this season.

Harden 15-assist games: 6

Harden lost to the Raptors, but he did have his sixth 15-assist game of the season. That went along with 12 turnovers, but think of it this way: Harden had one 15-assist game all of last season.

Dwight Howard rebounds: 20

The man the Rockets left for dead had 23 points and 20 rebounds in a victory against the Pacers. He shoot 10 for 12 from the field. It’s his first 20-rebound game of this season; he had only two last season.

30-point performances: 8

Kawhi Leonard, Russell Westbrook, DeMarcus Cousins, LeBron James, Damian Lillard, Kevin Love, Stephen Curry and Anthony Davis all had 30 points or more. Kevin Durant had 28, James Harden 29. There is an absolutely ridiculous amount of talent in the NBA right now.
