Microsoft may be enduring some struggles with its Windows Phone platform, but it seems one group is extremely happy to keep using the service.
A report from CNET has found that the New York Police Department (NYPD) is equipping all of its officers with a Windows Phone, along with their gun and badge.
The study found that the NYPD has been handing out Lumia 830 and Lumia 640 XL smartphones to its 36,000 officers, along with department-issued email addresses since 2015.
The NYPD reportedly chose the Windows Phone devices over iOS and Android competitors due to Microsoft’s expertise in security and remote working.
Microsoft has also worked with the NYPD to develop a number of specialised apps to help its officers.
This includes a direct 911 line that goes to an officer rather than a dispatcher, which the department says has dropped the response time for crimes in progress by over 12 percent.
Also included in the suite of apps were a police records search, in-house messaging, a case management system and a media library for training videos and policy updates.
The report adds that the NYPD is looking to upgrade to devices running Windows 10 by next summer in order to take advantage of the improved work services in Microsoft’s newest software.
Windows Phone devices currently make up around one per cent of the global smartphone market.
The News will come as a welcome fillup for Microsoft, as Windows Phone has endured a number of struggles in recent months.
The company recently revealed it would be cutting nearly three thousand jobs from its smartphone operations back in July following a long period of decline.
Microsoft had already said it would be laying off 1,850 other workers back in May as it looked to streamline its many operations.
The cuts mean that the company has now let go 10 per cent of its total workforce in the past few years.
Reports last month also suggested that the Windows 10 maker is set to ditch the Lumia brand, which has been in circulation since 2011, and end production of all devices by the end of the year.
Microsoft had been thought to instead be preparing the launch of an all-new ‘Surface Phone’, similar to its Surface Book and Surface Pro devices.
The Surface Phone could even be a hybrid device, with leaked images suggesting it will have a keyboard cover that allows users to type, similar to Microsoft’s Surface Pro devices.
