An optimistic England fan has launched a petition calling for a bank holiday on Monday if England win the World Cup.
The petition on Parliament’s Website has now been signed by more than 200,000 people, as of 8am on Tuesday morning.
That means it it has double the 100,000 signatories required to trigger a debate in Parliament.
England take on Croatia in a World Cup semi final on Wednesday night. If they win, they’ll face France in Sunday’s final.
The petition points out that not much work will get done on Monday should the Three Lions lift the World Cup in Moscow on Sunday.
It says: “If England win the world cup, the Monday should be made a bank holiday for 2018.
“We need this for all those supporting England as the next day will not be pleasant for all fans.”
England fans in the North East are among those backing the petition the most. Its map shows North East constituencies shaded in dark red tones, indicating many people in the region support the idea.
If a Government petition is signed by more then 100,000, then it will be considered for a debate in Parliament.
However, its author Liam Betson is yet to receive an official response to his campaign.
Parliament won’t have very long to consider the petition or for the Government to create a bank holiday. Monday is just five days away, while MPs are usually away from Westminster on Fridays and weekends.
As you may have heard, there is is quite a lot on the Government’s plate at the moment, with cabinet ministers resigning in a Brexit row and the possibility of Prime Minister Theresa May facing a vote of no confidence .
However, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had previously backed calls for a celebration if Kane and co. lift the cup on Sunday.
A senior Labour spokesman said: “We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but I think it is the case that Jeremy believes that if England were to win the World Cup there should be a public bank holiday in celebration.”
He added that the bank holiday would be for the whole United Kingdom, not just England.
“The World Cup is a very special international competition,” he said. “It’s something that brings people together on a very large scale and we need recognition of that and recognition of the importance of football in the country.”
Betting firm oddschecker has launched its own World Cup bank holiday Monday petition on the change.org Website, which has been signed by 4,000.
If you do think it’s going to happen, Paddy Power is offering odds of 7/2 on a national holiday being called should England win the World Cup.
Would be nice though, wouldn’t it?
