More than 30 MPs are campaigning to oust the PM in favour of brexiteer Mr Gove, who would step down in 2021 to allow no-nonsense Ms Davidson to swoop in under a top secret operation dubbed the ‘Gove-Davidson succession’, The Sun reports.
Scottish Conservatives leader Ms Davidson already has her eye on the coveted First Minister role and is aiming to push out SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon in the next Holyrood elections in 2021.
But senior Tories also want Ms Davidson to replace Mrs May as punishment for her botched EU divorce bill debacle that will see the UK cough up an eye-watering £39billion to break free from the bloc’s shackles.
A former cabinet minister told the paper Ms Davidson, nicknamed “the messiah” is “the answer to the party’s problems” and that the Environment Secretary is able to “fill the gap” during the crucial Brexit transition period.
The source said: “Michael wants to be the leader, but he also accepts he can’t fight a general election.
“He knows he’s toxic to too many voters after his education reforms and running the Leave campaign.”
Another party source added: “The party needs to find the right leader to follow Theresa, and someone who can win an election. The problem is they’re not necessarily the same person.”
Should the plot gather enough support it would mean four Conservative leaders in just seven years, with odds on Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and newbie Home Secretary Savid Javid to launch their own leadership campaigns.
In the run-up to all-important talks, Mrs May faced backlash from Brexit-backing backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg and his gang of eurosceptics Mr Gove, Boris Johnson and Liam Fox over her plan to keep Britain tied to the Brussels by opting for a customs union partnership model that would see the UK collect tariffs for the bloc’s imported goods.
Mrs May’s persona has been heavily criticised and was said to be one of the many reasons she party lost the majority in last year’s damning election.
Ms Davidson, meanwhile, had won a legion of fans north of the border thanks to her relatable personality and directness.
The 39-year-old also last month announced she and partner Jen Wilson were expecting their first child together this autumn after undergoing IVF.
Ms Davidson also recently put Ms Sturgeon on the blackfoot by tearing apart her plan to the Sterling as Scotland’s future currency should a second independence referendum be successful.
