Aerial pictures captured the moment the lava slammed into the ocean, belching thick clouds of steam into the sky.
Lava spilling off the southeastern edge of the island of Hawaii is producing a noxious laze where it hits the seawater.
The fumes are called laze, a toxic by-product formed when hot lava hits the ocean, sending hydrochloric acid and volcanic glass particles into the air.
The more lava, the more laze is created and the deadly concoction can cause lung, eye and skin irritation.
