Microsoft has rolled out the Windows 10 April update with lots of positive upgrades but it appears there are some bugs causing problems too.
Windows 10 is apparently causing the Google Chrome browser and Microsoft’s very own Cortana artificial intelligent voice assistant to freeze and even lock computers.
The issues on Windows 10 were reported by users on Reddit and Microsoft’s support forums following the update’s general release on Monday.
The bug affects Chrome, which is one of Microsoft’s most used apps with 66.1% of the global desktop browsing market share in April, says StatCounter.
The issue was, alledgedly, made known to Microsoft a month ago by testers of the Windows Insider program, yet the update was released with the bug still in place.
The Windows 10 April update release was already delayed after a previous bug was found that caused machine crashes.
Microsoft did respond to the cries for help by confirming the issue was something that the company was working on. The fix should arrive by May 8th.
On the Microsoft support forum a spokesperson confirmed: “Some devices may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as Hey Cortana or Chrome, after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.”
One user on Reddit described the issue as affecting Microsoft’s own hardware too: “My Surface Laptop freezes all day as well. Pretty unusable and annoying.”
As a quick fix in the interim, before the bug fix update rolls out, Microsoft suggests the follow steps:
1. Try a Windows key sequence to wake the screen. If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds. If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen.
2. If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid.
