Most teams use the two-week period before the Spanish Grand Prix to make the first major set of upgrades to their cars.
And McLaren are hoping their new aero package – which can increase the car’s top speed by improving the aerodynamics – will hand him the advantage.
However, Mercedes and Ferrari are highly likely to also be adjusting their own systems but Alonso hopes it does not have a positive impact.
Hamilton currently leads the Drivers’ Championship by four points – but Alonso wants to try and push the early pacesetters in Barcelona this weekend.
“In Barcelona there is a new aero package coming, but I think 95 per cent of the paddock is bringing a new aero package to Barcelona,” Alonso said.
“So, maybe the gap remains as it is, or we just recover a little bit, or we lose more ground.
“I think it is up to us to make that package work to expectations and hopefully some others, they don’t deliver.
“That is our hope.”
Alonso spent his weekend off competing, and winning, the World Endurance Championship on his debut.
The Spaniard was preparing for Le Mans next month, where he will bid to complete the Triple Crown which includes the Monaco Grand Prix and Indy 500.
“I think it’s definitely challenging,” Alonso added.
“All the race long you need to stay always at the top of your game.
“It’s a good test, and I’m ready for Le Mans.”
