Starting a home based Business is a very exciting undertaking. Being your own boss, having a flexible schedule and being around your family are just a few of the unique opportunities you have with a home based Business.
However, working at home presents some challenges, like in any career, that can frustrate a home based Business entrepreneur. One challenge that must be over come is isolation.
Most home based Businesses start off with one employee, yourself. This means that you make every decision, on every issue. When you work in an office you usually have a superior or co-worker who you can bounce ideas off of. When you are working alone you do not have that network to immediately tap into.
For many new home based Business owners lack of Business and Marketing experience can be a very big obstacle to overcome. Most home based Businesses fail because of this. A lot of home based Business opportunities get you excited about making money, but few actually help you market your Business leaving you standing frustrated and empty handed.
The final challenge self doubt. When you are your own boss and things do not go as planned, it is pretty easy to start doubting your decisions. You start to question your abilities to operate a home based Business or make it financially.
To combat these issues, I would strongly encourage any owner of a home based Business to find a mentor. The definition of a mentor is an influential senior sponsor or supporter. Some home based Business opportunities are built on providing you with a mentor, which is great, others do not.
A mentor can help you with all of the challenges listed above. A mentor can be that person you need to bounce ideas off of or help you think of angles you may not have seen. Your mentor is a phone call or e-mail away to help fight off your isolation of working at home. Your mentor should be your cheerleader. Someone to help drive you and keep you motivated to succeed.
I would suggest not abusing this relationship however. They are there to support, guide teach, and cheer-lead for you. They are not there to run your Business for you. You do not just need to have one mentor. You should look to surround yourself with successful owners of all different kinds of Business. They all have something to share.
As an owner of a Business do not be afraid to admit you do not have all the answers, however, with the help of a mentor there is a greater chance you will. Staying connected with other successful people is one of the best ways make sure your Business will succeed.
