In Florida, the Democrats picked up a Republican-held state House seat in a Sarasota district that President Trump won in 2016 by five percentage points.
Democrat Margaret Good defeated Republican James Buchanan 52 to 45 percent during a special election Tuesday, held due to the resignation of state Rep. Alex Miller; she resigned halfway through her first term, after winning in 2016 by about 16 percentage points. Republicans still retain control of both of the state’s legislative chambers.
Good, an attorney, told constituents she would protect public lands, wants to expand Medicaid, and is opposed to using public funds to pay for charter schools, HuffPost reports. Democrats have picked up 36 state legislative seats since Trump’s election.
