Heidfeld arrived in Morocco after a mixed weekend before Christmas, finishing third in the first Hong Kong ePrix but crossing line in 16th in the weekend’s second race.
The points put him fifth in the championship, but the German will start well down the grid in this afternoon’s race (4pm) after losing control of his car in cool, slippery conditions.
“It was just my mistake. I’m sorry for the team,” Heidfeld said.
“I just waited a bit too long. I lost it. There is quite a bit of damage.
“I’ll see what the team say but usually they are very quick.”
Heidfeld will be hoping not to lose too much ground on championship leader Sam Bird, although the Brit has been quick to emphasise that the season is still very young.
“I’ve not really even thought about [leading the Drivers’ Championship] to be honest because we’re so early in the season,” Bird said.
“It is a nice position to be in and it is great that I’ve scored good early points because it stops me playing catch-up.
“I’m not protecting anything right now. Come back to me in Week 8 or Week 9 and it will be a different story but at the moment I just want to keep scoring some good points.
“I don’t think this will suit us as much as Hong Kong did but second last year wasn’t too bad so there is no reason why we can’t go into this race feeling confident.”
