Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino says he is happy with Danny Rose’s reaction to being dropped, but cannot say for certain if the player will still be at the club next season.
Rose, 27, was left out of the Spurs squad that lost to Arsenal in the first north London derby of the season last Saturday (18 November), with his manager citing fitness concerns as the reason over his omission. The left-back was back in the starting XI on Tuesday, however, completing 90 minutes as Spurs came from behind to beat Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
Speaking after that win in Germany, Rose revealed he was left “fuming” at being overlooked at the Emirates Stadium, but Pochettino has welcomed that response from his player.
“I like when the player feels that emotion because it means they are interested in helping the team and they want to play,” Pochettino told a press conference ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with West Bromwich Albion. “In front of me he was never upset or angry, he never showed that behaviour, he was normal. You can ask me about all the players involved. Of course they are ‘fuming’, but I am the boss, that is the problem for the players.”
Rose remains heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, with latest reports suggesting Jose Mourinho’s side are ready to make an offer in January. Rose’s future in north London has been under scrutiny since a summer interview where he questioned Tottenham’s transfer policy and revealed his desire to join a club who are ready to pay him what he feels he is worth.
While Ashley Young has done what has been required of him when playing at left-back this season, United remain in the market for a long-term solution to the problematic area, with Luke Shaw’s future at Old Trafford looking bleak.
Pochettino was not ready to discuss speculation over Rose’s future on Thursday but appeared to admit there is a chance the player will move on.
“This is not the moment to talk about that,” Pochettino said. “All players have contracts with us, involved in our project. You cannot guess what is going to happen in the future.”
