Rail services running to and from Walton-on-the-Naze have been suspended, with disruption expected to continue until at least 9pm.
Greater Anglia chiefs have said no trains will run between Thorpe-Le-Soken and Walton-on-the-Naze until Network Rail engineers have assessed the site and consider it safe.
Other services running to and from Colchester will be diverted to Clacton-on-Sea.
Both Greater Anglia and Network Rail have apologised for the disruption.
Updates are expected to follow on the rail operator’s JourneyCheck site within the next hour.
Replacement buses operated by Talisman, New Horizon and Tendring are operating between Walton and Thorpe-Le-Soken.
Passengers are being asked to find the bus stop closest to their station by visiting the Network Rail website.
