Matic ‘scares’ Gerrard
08.45: Steven Gerrard has admitted he was scared as a Liverpool fan when he found out Manchester United had signed Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.
“I couldn’t believe it [Chelsea sold him],” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“I think out of all the Manchester United players I’ve seen them sign over the years he’s the one, as a Liverpool fan, I thought ‘Oh no. I hope not,’ and then it happened.
“[He’s] one of the toughest opponents I’ve played against as a No.6. He’s very leggy, he’s good in the air, he competes, he always gets a toe in, he can run and match your runs.”
Mourinho sack claims
07.45: Manchester United officials want to oust Jose Mourinho and replace him with former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, according to sensational reports in Spain.
Despite the Red Devils’ fine start to the season, all is not well behind the scenes at Old Trafford, according to Don Balon.
The Spanish outlet says the board are frustrated by his negative tactics, highlighted in last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool.
United are said to be lining up former Barca boss Luis Enrique as a potential replacement if Mourinho’s tactics continue to divide the club.
Rashford injury update
07.00: Jose Mourinho is hopeful Marcus Rashford’s injury in the 1-0 win over Benfica will not be serious.
The England international was forced off with a knee problem after scoring the only goal in the match from a free-kick.
“Rashford felt something in his knee, I hope nothing important,” Mourinho said.
He may now miss Saturday’s game with Huddersfield at The John Smith’s Stadium (3pm).
Bale United snub
06.45: Gareth Bale would reportedly turn down a move to Manchester United in favour of rejoining his former club Tottenham.
Spanish outlet Don Balon claim the Red Devils are back in for the 28-year-old, having tried to sign him in the David Moyes era.
However, Bale is said to have his heart set on a return to north London if he decides to make a return to the Premier League.
The report says Chelsea have also been showing an interest in the Wales international who is under contract with Real Madrid until June 2022.
