4K and HD TVs continue to plummet in price meaning you can now pick up a very decent set for under £500.
For that money you’ll get a very good picture with most TVs of this price even featuring the ability to play content in Ultra HD 4K quality.
However, although the movie you’re watching may look as sharp as a newly made pin, its sound is likely to leave a lot to be desired.
Most cheap TVs feature very average speakers which will be embedded in the rear casing of the television – not ideal for a cinema-style experience.
This is when many TV addicts opt for an audio-boosting soundbar.
One of the best soundbars of the year came from Q Acoustics who recently picked up the top prize at the yearly T3 awards.
Now the audio firm is back with a new speaker called the M2.
This soundbase box sits right underneath your TV making it an ideal option if you haven’t mounted your set to the wall.
Express.co.uk has been using the Q Acoustics M2 for the past few weeks and we’ve been left very impressed by its sound quality and sheer ease of use.
Out of the box, setup is simple with the M2 plugging straight into the back of your TV via a standard HDMI cable – an optical cable can also be used if you prefer.
Our Sony TV, which is a few years old, instantly recognised the speaker with sound booming out of it in seconds.
And the audio it produces is very good indeed.
At lower volumes you might wonder why you have bothered, but crank up the sound on the latest Hollywood blockbuster and you’ll realise it was well worth the investment.
Bass thunders through its powerful built-in subwoofer and its 180-degree sonics will have no trouble filling your room with sound – impressive stuff for its relatively small size and low price compared with the competition.
To add even more depth and weight Q Acoustics has included a MoviEQ function which can be switched on to emphasise the bass further and enhance movie soundtracks and video game action.
Like most soundbars/soundbases the M2 can also be used as a Bluetooth speaker and it even supports NFC for instant one touch pairing.
Overall the M2 is a very decent option for anyone wanting to boost the sound coming from their TV.
There are a couple of niggles as it’s not the prettiest device and its relatively boring design certainly doesn’t blend into your living room.
The remote that ships with the M2 also feels very cheap and its credit card size means you’ll definitely lose it down the back of the sofa.
That said, on our test the M2 instantly linked with the TV remote so there’s little need for this extra controller anyway.
Q Acoustics might not be a name you have heard of but this company is certainly making plenty of noise within the audio industry.
The M3 soundbar has already won awards this year and the M2 soundbase could easily follow with its own set of gongs.
At £299 it’s not an impulse buy but this price seems like a bargain against most of competition – the Sonos PLAYBASE costs over double that price at £699.
If your TV is not stuck to the wall this soundbase is an excellent option and, despite its uninspiring design, it’s guaranteed to make your content sound bigger, louder and a whole lot better.
