Bakery giant Greggs is opening a new store in Newcastle as part of a scheme to transform an empty plot of land into a new commercial development.
The former car parts store Motor World on Chillingham Road, Heaton , was flattened earlier this year to make way for a three-storey building with a supermarket, retail unit and six apartments.
Sainsbury’s is expected to create a raft of jobs as part of the scheme by taking the large unit – and now Greggs has confirmed it is closing its existing Chillingham Road store to open a larger store within the development.
All staff at the current store, just yards away at 265 Chillingham Road, will move to the new Greggs at number 209, and it is hoped new jobs will also be created.
Floor plans for the shop show that seating will be included too.
A Greggs spokeswoman said: “We can confirm we will be relocating our Chillingham Road shop before Christmas.
“Anyone who is interesting in working for Greggs can register and apply for jobs at greggsfamily.co.uk . We will have more details closer to the time of opening.”

Greggs has ploughed millions of pounds over the last four years into its strategy to modernise its portfolio.
The shake-up has involved the closure of some stores, in favour of opening new stores in locations more convenient for customers, such as Business and retail parks.
A store on the corner of Blackett Street , for example, was closed and moved into a larger retail unit on the same street, and a similar move was made on Grainger Street.
The Jesmond Group, the architects who led the planning application to transform the site, said building work is gaining momentum.
Eric Hasler, chief executive, said: “This is a commercial development with ancillary housing, and Sainsbury’s has been on board from the start as the main tenant.
“Now Greggs can be revealed as the Business taking the smaller retail unit. We expect the project will be finishing early in the new year so it’s well on now.”
Greggs now has around 1,800 stores across the UK and it has a current target of 2,000 stores.
