Cheating is taboo in most relationships, but a wife who is wondering “is he cheating?” can look out for one sign her husband might be straying.
However, the same can’t be applied to women, scientists have found.
A study in 2010 found that more intelligent men are less likely to cheat on their partners.
Researchers claimed this is because smarter men value monogamy more than men with lower IQs.
The more intelligent a man is directly correlates with how likely he is to be faithful to his partner, scientists at the London School of Economics and Political Science discovered.
The same cannot be said for women, though.
There is no evidence that more intelligent women are less likely to cheat on their parters.
It has also recently been found that women cheat almost as much as men. Previously it was thought men were statistically more likely to be unfaithful.
The 2010 study looked at the IQs of thousands of teenagers and adults, and asked them about their attitudes towards cheating.
Dr Satoshi Kanazawa said: “As the empirical analysis … shows, more intelligent men are more likely to value monogamy and sexual exclusivity than less intelligent men.”
So if your male partner has an average or less than average IQ, it could be a sign that they will pursue sexual intimacy outside of their relationship.
However, men will have to look for more clues than just how intelligent their partner is.
Another survey has found that there is one thing that is more likely to cause your partner to cheat.
Seventy per cent of people who cheated on website Illicit Encounters have children, research showed, and some specifically cited children as their reason for cheating.
Another sign your wife or girlfriend could be about to cheat is if they have recently reconnected with an ex.
What is more, women are more likely to make a habit out of cheating than men are.
