Stokes will not be on the plane to Australia on October 28, when England depart for the Ashes, due to a police investigation into his arrest after an incident in the early hours of September 25.
The England all-rounder was subsequently suspended on full pay along with Alex Hales, who was with him on the night in question.
Yesterday, Stokes had his sponsorship contract with New Balance terminated due to behaviour that “that does not match our brand culture and values”.
But the 26-year-old has not been dropped by global sports agency ISM and his agent Neil Fairbrother has today come out in support of the cricketer.
“Ben explained to me the full circumstances of what happened in Bristol and I told him that he has my total support and backing,” Fairbrother said.
“I am aware that he has fully cooperated with the police inquiry and voluntarily provided a detailed statement on the same day as the incident.
“He will continue to assist the police in any way he can.
“Ben will also make public his full explanation and evidence when the time is right.
“On legal advice, that is not possible whilst the investigation continues and no charges have been brought forward.
“Ben does not wish to prejudice the process.
“He is also concerned about the impact the widespread publicity has on everyone involved including the ECB, his team-mates and the game of cricket itself which he loves.”
Stokes had been expected to play a major role in England’s efforts to retain the Ashes the won in 2015 and avenge their 5-0 defeat Down Under in 2013/14, during which series he made his debut.
But if he does not go on the tour, Australia legend Steve Waugh believes England’s chances of victory are next to nothing.
“If he doesn’t come, I don’t think they can win the Ashes,” Waugh said.
“I think if it was anyone in the Australian side, they wouldn’t be picked.
“You can’t do that these days in public. It just didn’t look good and it’s a bad image for the game.
“I think [the England selectors] are pretty keen for him to play in Australia.
“He’s probably their best player, so it would be a real shame if he’s not out here.”
