AFC Totton’s new Portugese forward, the cousin of a European Championship final match-winner, was one of three new signings to score as the Stags won their opening game.
Nimes Pina is a distant cousin of Eder, the scorer of the only goal as Portugal beat France in last year’s European Championship final.
After coming on as a substitute he completed the scoring with his first touch after Craig Feeney and Stuart Mott netted on their second ‘debut’ for the club.
Midfielder Mott followed Feeney from Winchester City back to the Testwood Stadium on Thursday, when Pina also put pen to paper.
Guinea Bissau-born Pina, 34, was a less familiar name on the Totton teamsheet before replacing Feeney in the second half.
He has had a nomadic career which began at Portugese outfit Estoril Praia in the early noughties.
“We got to know him as he ‘s been coaching our U18s through MLTNC (Matt Le Tissier Natural Coaching) and has been training with us for the last year,” explained Stags manager Louis Langdown.
“I didn’t know much about his background until our analyst at [Solent] university did some research and told me he played in the UEFA (Intertoto) Cup and that we needed to get him involved!
“It’s been clear in training he’s got a bit about him and he was a good physical presence when he came on.
“He looks very young, no-one can believe he’s 34, but he’s short of fitness at the moment so we’re just trying to get as much as we can out of him.”
Pina, who is 6ft 1in, scored Totton’s third from goalkeeper Shane Murphy’s long punt in the 85th minute.
Feeney gave Totton a 47th-minute lead after capitalising on a mix-up, before Karl Rickard headed an equaliser
Nathaniel Sherborne twice went close – including a header saved from Ian Oliver’s cross – before Mott restored the Stags lead by heading in Jack Masterton’s cross at the far post in the 69th minute.
“We were desperate to win the first game and for all three signings to score was fantastic,” added Langdown, who used all three of his substitutes.
“It’s the strongest bench I’ve had as Totton manager,” he added.
Totton: Murphy, Roberts (Gunson), Oliver, Nolan, Mott, Chugg Curtis Young, Masterton, Feeney (Nimes Pina), Sherborne (Whittingham), Adekunle.
Subs not used: Wilde, Hellyar.
Picador Renault have signed a club sponsorship deal with AFC Totton for this season while estate agents Hamwic have agreed to sponsor the Stags’ shirts.
