“We’ve given you too many” was how one Southampton official playfully rebuffed the advances of a Liverpool fan asking Virgil van Dijk to join the Reds.
Liverpool have long been linked with a move for van Dijk as Jurgen Klopp looks to strength his options at the heart of the defence.
The Dutch international defender was reported to be on the verge of a move to Merseyside earlier this summer before the Reds publicly ended their interest, and offered an apology with the Saints threatening to report the club over their pursuit of their star man.
The 26-year-old is still recovering from an ankle injury sustained in January but was present for his side’s 0-0 draw with St Gallen in Switzerland on Saturday, writes the Liverpool Echo.
But that didn’t stop one cheeky Liverpool fan from urging van Dijk to move to Anfield.
“Van Dijk come to Liverpool,” one supporter shouted as the player alighted the team bus.
The centre-back didn’t offer much of a response, but a Saints representative replied: “We’ve given you too many.”
Southampton have seen five of their players move to Anfield since 2014, with Sadio Mane the latest last summer.
Liverpool had lined up a deal for van Dijk, although Southampton want £75m for the former Celtic man.
