This week I’ve chosen seven wines that all share one thing in common: a touch of sweetness. The trend these days is for dry wines, but sometimes it’s great to have wines that have some sweetness, especially if this is balanced out with fresh acidity. Famously, riesling is a grape variety that really works when made in an off-dry style, so I’ve chosen four in my super selection. I’ve also included a couple of sparkling wines and a rosé for good measure. They’re all perfect for summertime sipping.
From left: Paul Cluver Elgin Riesling 2016, South Africa £13, Marks & Spencer, 10.5% alcohol
This pristine, well-balanced riesling comes from the cool-climate Elgin region, and has lively lemony fruit with pretty sweet table grape and pear flavours.
Max Ferd Richter Mülheimer Sonnenlay Zeppelin Riesling 2016, Mosel, Germany £12.99, laithwaites.co.uk (0333 014 8149), 9.5% alcohol
This wine gained fame for being served on a Zeppelin as it crossed the Atlantic. It’s delicate and perfumed with attractive apple, peach and lemon fruit as well as a tingling, zippy acidity.
Champagne Moët & Chandon Ice Impérial NV, France £59.99, Selfridges, 12% alcohol
This is Moët’s famous champagne but it’s slightly sweet and designed to be served on ice. Once it’s really cold, it works brilliantly. It’s best to pour the wine first then add the ice, as it fizzes up less. This is great for bling outdoor drinking in the sun and well worth splashing out on.
Asda Extra Special Asti NV, Piedmont, Italy £5.68, Asda, 7% alcohol
Bring a bit of sunshine into your life with this joyful moscato. It’s sweet but fresh, with the fizziness adding brightness to the sweet grape fruitiness.
Goldschild Müdener Funkenber Riesling Spätlese 2015, Mosel, Germany £10.60, tanners-wines.co.uk (01743 234500), 7% alcohol
This is very juicy and lively with off-dry citrus, pear and melon fruit flavours. Tangy, textured, bright and zippy, it’s mouthwatering and moreish with good purity.
Riesling Feinherb Brauneberger Kurfürstlay 2015, Mosel, Germany £5.49, Lidl, 10.5% alcohol
Lively and exotic, this riesling combines piercing lemony fruit with some sweet table grape and melon notes. Very clean and a bit spicy, too, it’s well balanced.
Cimarosa Shiraz Rosé 2016, Australia £4.29, Lidl, 12.5% alcohol
Bright pink/red in colour, this seductive, slightly sweet cherry and raspberry fruited wine has a very soft, smooth character. It’s perfect for those who find some wines just a bit too dry.
