With just 46 days to go before the start of the Test summer, Anderson was forced off the field after collapsing mid-over early on day one of the Roses match at Old Trafford.
After receiving treatment in the middle he was fit enough to walk off unaided.
Anderson, 34, will have the injury further assessed this morning as England and Lancashire wait to discover the extent of the tear.
Anderson suffered a stress fracture of his right shoulder early last summer then missed most of last winter with a recurrence and this setback is a worry in an Ashes year.
Despite not figuring in England’s white-ball action these days Anderson remains a key to their Test attack.
He had bowled beautifully yesterday, removing Alex Lees and taking 1-5 in 5.3 overs before injury struck.
