Conte has won the Premier League in his first season at Chelsea after leaving the Italian national team following Euro 2016.
The Blues finished 10th last term and therefore didn’t play any European football this year, meaning they could put further emphasis on their league action.
Curbishley thinks Conte has earned the right to tell owner Roman Abramovich who he wants to bring to Stamford Bridge and a defender will be one of the new faces to be signed.
“This summer now, I’m going to be really interested to see what business they do,” he said on Sky Sports.
“Now, he’s earnt the right to sit down with the owner and say ‘this is what I want, I need this, I need that, can you go out and do it for me?’. I think he’s done a fantastic job, brilliant, because I think he got the best out of what he inherited and took on.
“Now, a bit like with what we saw with Ranieri and Leicester, now he’s got the keys to the front door if you like, now the pressure is on him to improve the squad and also include the fact they’re going to be in Europe.
“I think it was a real plus factor this season for Chelsea, not playing in Europe and could concentrate on the domestic stuff. I think he will be looking to bring another central defender in.
“I know he has the young players, (Nathan) Ake and (Kurt) Zouma etc, but with John Terry leaving and perhaps, even though (Gary) Cahill and (Cesar) Azpilicueta have done a fantastic job, I think he will try and bring another centre-back in.
“Someone with pace and a bit of strength, so I think he will be looking to do that.”
Striker Diego Costa has been linked with a mega-money move to the Chinese Super League and Curbishley thinks Chelsea must bring a new striker in even if the Spaniard stays plus a couple of squad players.
“The Costa situation has to be sorted, the situation with this Chinese bid if it’s true,” the ex-West Ham boss added.
“The wages are so fantastic, morally I can’t see how a club can keep hold of a player when he’s being offered that much and they can’t match it.
“If he feels that is a move then they will be looking in that area, centre-forward, and I think they need to be looking in that area anyway, perhaps another top-notch striker.
“Apart from that, perhaps he needs to bring in a couple of squad players that he can trust, people who know they won’t be playing every week but can come in and do a job when it’s needed to be done.”
Chelsea play their final Premier League game of the season against Sunderland this Sunday.
