Video captured from a car behind the intense scene showed the jaw-dropping moment unfold.
The red Nissan sedan had become wedged into the back left of the trailer truck, but only one of the drivers realised the accident had occurred.
Still stuck to the back of the huge vehicle, the car was dragged along a Californian freeway for miles.
Brian Steimke filmed the shocking event and could be heard in the clip saying: “They’re dragging the car. They don’t know what’s going on here.”
Smoke billowed out from behind the car as Steimke sped up to see inside it.
As he passed the red sedan, the car’s driver looked over at him with a baffled look on his face, sticking his hand out the window to try to wave down the truck driver ahead.
The car’s driver said to Steimke: “He’s not stopping.”
Eventually Steimke caught up with the truck cabin and a group of motorists were able to wave the driver down.
The truck driver said he had no idea he was hauling the sudden extra load.
Steimke asked him: “Why were you driving so far?” The truck driver said he “didn’t know” he had a car wedged on the back of his vehicle.
Steimke added: “’What do you mean you didn’t know it dude? He’s on your truck.”
California Highway Patrol told KTLA the truck merged into another lane to overtake a slower-moving truck, hitting the Nissan in the process.
Thankfully the driver of the car managed to avoid serious injury.
The video was originally uploaded to Steimke’s Facebook page, where he said the “poor guy” got dragged “at least four miles”.
Another clip revealed this week showed why you should never undertake a car on the motorway.
A vehicle was caught on camera doing a barrel roll before coming to a halt at the side of the motorway, after it tried to perform a risky merging manoeuvre.
