Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp has paid tribute to former Aston Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu.
Redknapp, whose Blues team take on Villa on Sunday, was responding to news of the 44-year-old’s death which was announced this morning.
Redknapp’s son Jamie played with Ehiogu in the international youth ranks in the 1990s and the 70-year-old praised him as a ‘monster player’.
“He was a fantastic lad,” Redknapp said. “It’s an absolute shock, I couldn’t believe it this morning when someone told me the news – an absolute bolt out of the blue.
“My condolences go to his family and everybody who knew him. It’s a massive loss.
“He was working at Tottenham, enjoying his work there and doing a great job.
“He was from my part of the country, a Hackney boy. He was an absolute monster of a player, a big strong, powerful lad and obviously going up the ranks in the coaching world as well.
“A genuine, all round lovely guy.
“Of course it puts things into context, it was sudden but you just never know do you?
“He was probably a super-fit athlete, still in the prime of his life.”
